CHAPTER
SEVEN
The Revelation
It was our first study group at Professor Cohenâs. I had to repeat his name to myself often or I would call him Ryszard or worse, Scary Guy. Natasha stood by me as I knocked on the door of the old craftsman in South Park. A fellow student answered the door.
âThereâs no reason to knock,â she said with a smile. âCome in, coffee is over here,â she pointed to a shaker style table with coffee, cream, sugar and an assortment of cookies. âHelp yourself, then come join us in the den.â And she was gone.
Natasha giggled. âLook at this house,â she said. âEverything is so gorgeous. The floors must be original.â She pointed to the hardwood.
The house was impressive. Rys.. I mean, Professor Cohen had done his homework. This is just the type of house I imagined a professor owning. Original woodwork. Bookcases -full of books. Art decorated every wall. Copies, but art. Weird. Be normal. I told myself.
Natasha was animatedly talking about books and art. With a cup of coffee in hand, I braced myself to enter the den and confront Professor Cohen.
Prepare-make (something) ready for use or consideration.
âAre you ready?â I said. Natasha grabbed her coffee and grinned.
âYep.â
We walked through the pocket doors. Some students sat on leather couches while others lounged on oversized pillows on the floor. A girl immediately caught my attention. She occupied the seat beside Ryszard who sat in an espresso brown leather chair, just like the one Mom had in the library. She called it mid-century modern. Funny, I wasnât as shaky seeing him as I expected to be. Maybe my level of Ryszard tolerance was different in a room full of peers. He was talking about Da Vinci. The girl. Back to the girl. Aneta. It had to be her. Her hair was longer than the photo I had seen. It was a different color, too. Brunette instead of blonde like Sabiliaâs. She looked more grown up than the picture too, which made sense. She wasnât fifteen anymore. She had to be seventeen or eighteen. I tried to get a read on her. There was no sign of fear in her expression. She looked like a student. Ripped skinny jeans and a long sweater with bell sleeves. She wore no shoes, just orange and brown patterned wool socks.
âWhatâs going on in there?â I jerked around and looked at Natasha, who was making googly eyes at Professor Cohen. Great. Sheâs fallen under his spell. How was I going to handle this? It suddenly hit me - the earbud! Cecylia was on the receiving end.
âCanât talk right now,â I said with gritted teeth.
âI know, right,â Natasha answered me. âItâs so overwhelming. Like in a good way, right?â
Thatâs not how I would describe it. Like a lamb led to the slaughter was more like it.
âYeah, right. Letâs find a spot where we can hear more clearly,â I said, more for the sake of Cecylia than Natasha.
Up to this point, we had been standing awkwardly at the open pocket doors.
